30 sec short film-cont.

In the creation of this short film, my role is the 'Camera' person.
So I've taken several photos of the door in the studio is Waverley building.

As our genre of the film is terror, we wanted to have a very dark room with the door.

Here is the picture of the door in the studio with light:

And here is a picture of the door in a dark room. We like to have the stream of light coming from the outside:

The stream of light will hopefully help the film create a scary stmosphere.

30 mins short film

On the 21st of October, I had a meeting with the group where we've talked and decided on the plot. We've also created schedule for practicing the film, but due to the misunderstanding in the booking for the equipment, we couldn't due the practice. But we've tested the lights and footsteps, making sure that everything is ready for us to film on Thursday.

So here are our final desicion on our short film:

Animation seminar 1

Last week we had a lecture and seminar about creating a character using 3d Studio Max. I've then went on to create a model using 3D studioMax:

It was quite hard to crete the round ear at the top of the model as the circle kept on separating from the head. The creation of hands and feet went quite well, though it would have been better if the hands were a little smaller.

Seminar 1- Audio Visual

In the AV seminar last week, we were given a task to find a film on the internet and dicuss how the visual story is told in our online journal. But since the online timetable wasn't accurate and I missed the AV seminar last week, I've decided to comment on 'Blade Runner Tears in the Rain'.

I’ve first watched the film with only sound without image. And I found that there was some narrative conveyed in sound:
 The sound of the rain
 The tone of the actor’s voice
 Quiet background music-peaceful tune
These all helps this sad scene even more emotional. The sound of the surrounding (i.e. rain) helps the viewer to feel the atmosphere of where the characters are. The tone of the voice (i.e. gentle and slow talking) helps us to sense the gentleness of the scene.
Although the sound without image conveys narrative which helps to feel the scene, it is hard for the viewer seeing the film without the image to understand fully and deeply about the scene.

Now I’ve watched the scene with image and sound: this will then made me understand even more about the scene.
We hear the footsteps and the sound of the bird flying towards the end of the film; by seeing this with both image and sound, the viewer understands the relation with the death of the character and the white bird flying.

Mise en scene of this film:
Lighting- lights coming in from the fan illustrates the natural light and also from the neon light, which gives the sense of location. Neon light gives rough, somewhat lonely image.
Colour- Not much colour involved in this scene, everything seems blue which makes this scene even quieter. It also illustrates purity in a way which connects with the death of the character.
Composition- Mostly close-up of the character to illustrate emotion through characters expression. Long view of the bird flying conveys the meaning of the death of the character (perhaps illustrates soul going back to heaven).
Art production- the location; outside with rain falling on the character gives the viewer feel pure, innocence and perhaps peacefulness, which all effectively shows the quiet death of the character.

Writing for script media-seminar 1 continued

Here are some of the basic plan for our film:

What the film is about? : ‘A guy being haunted by a duck’

How you see the film (visual style, audio, motif) : no dialogue, camera fade in and fade out, motifs- no car to hitchhike at the beginning and ending.

Some changes in the story: Portuguese dictionary, no cars passing when the character hitchhikes.

Some ideas of each scene:
Scene 1 - No cars passing at all and the character is bored.

Scene 2 - Government office: spills sandwich contents on his pants. Feels embarrassed and also being glance by the manager.

Scene 3 - Newspaper with headline that relates with animal rights of the duck. Also some random words written on notepad (no relation to newspaper).

Scene 4 - Funny dance move, out of tune.

Scene 5 - Fake duck on the pond, no football match.

Scene 6 - Shot from behind the characters’ shoulder onto computer screen.

Scene 7 - Official looking letter (content not official- about the duck)

Scene 8 - Normal queue in the Government office.

Scene 9 - Swimming scene: his swimming suit floats on water.

Scene 10 - zooms in letter, he gets annoyed, he starts hitchhike but no cars.

Ending/Credit - Black screen with ducks.

Writing for script media- Seminar 1

We are back in Year 2: The first seminar I had in week 11 was Writing for script media. In the seminar, we were to think about 'Why we have working inside out talk'.
And here are the list of things our seminar group came up with:

• So people can learn to analyse a text.
• Look at other peoples’ work.
• Learn to work as a team.
• Make up own ideas to add to the script.
• Try different things with the cameras.
• Practice with different equipment.
• Try to interpret other peoples’ work.
• So we can experience following and writing a script.
• Learn to deconstruct a script.
• Learn what a script looks like.
• Start to understand the process of scripting.

After discussing and gathering points for above question, we were given a small project to work on in the next 4 weeks in a group of three. The task was to create a short film based on the script that was given during this seminar.
