Seminar 1- Audio Visual

In the AV seminar last week, we were given a task to find a film on the internet and dicuss how the visual story is told in our online journal. But since the online timetable wasn't accurate and I missed the AV seminar last week, I've decided to comment on 'Blade Runner Tears in the Rain'.

I’ve first watched the film with only sound without image. And I found that there was some narrative conveyed in sound:
 The sound of the rain
 The tone of the actor’s voice
 Quiet background music-peaceful tune
These all helps this sad scene even more emotional. The sound of the surrounding (i.e. rain) helps the viewer to feel the atmosphere of where the characters are. The tone of the voice (i.e. gentle and slow talking) helps us to sense the gentleness of the scene.
Although the sound without image conveys narrative which helps to feel the scene, it is hard for the viewer seeing the film without the image to understand fully and deeply about the scene.

Now I’ve watched the scene with image and sound: this will then made me understand even more about the scene.
We hear the footsteps and the sound of the bird flying towards the end of the film; by seeing this with both image and sound, the viewer understands the relation with the death of the character and the white bird flying.

Mise en scene of this film:
Lighting- lights coming in from the fan illustrates the natural light and also from the neon light, which gives the sense of location. Neon light gives rough, somewhat lonely image.
Colour- Not much colour involved in this scene, everything seems blue which makes this scene even quieter. It also illustrates purity in a way which connects with the death of the character.
Composition- Mostly close-up of the character to illustrate emotion through characters expression. Long view of the bird flying conveys the meaning of the death of the character (perhaps illustrates soul going back to heaven).
Art production- the location; outside with rain falling on the character gives the viewer feel pure, innocence and perhaps peacefulness, which all effectively shows the quiet death of the character.
